Medicine Hat Public Library has an opening for a full time (37.5 hours/week) Library Technician in the Children’s Services Department; this position will commence in mid-June 2010.

The primary responsibilities of this position are to respond to user information needs through the use of information retrieval skills and knowledge of research tools, as well as to increase awareness and use of the library and its services. The successful applicant will be permanently assigned to the Children’s Services Department but will also staff other service points throughout the library. The Children’s Service Department provides programming for children from birth to age twelve both at the library and throughout the community including, storytimes, class visits / library tours, book talks, and other programs promoting the Library, its programs and services, literacy, and reading.

Applications from new graduates are welcome.

Requirements include a Library Technician’s diploma, proven customer service skills and the ability to adapt to new technologies and procedures. An undergraduate degree and/or course work in Children’s Literature are highly desirable.

Starting rate is $20.69/hour; job rate is $22.99/hour. The position also includes an excellent benefit package.

Medicine Hat is an urban community of over 60,000 in southeastern Alberta with an affordable cost of living. The library is the resource centre for the Shortgrass Library System, which serves libraries in southeastern Alberta.

The Library supports Catholic faith development in the Diocese through collecting, organizing, and lending resources. The Archives acts as the official repository for the records of the Diocese.
Responsibilities for this position include circulation of materials, customer service, updating library and archival databases, clerical support, and related tasks as required.

The successful applicant is a committed member of the Catholic Church, is flexible and a team player, is familiar with the small library or archival environment, has excellent oral and written skills, shows accuracy and attention to detail and is proficient with Microsoft Office as well as with internet searching. A background in volunteering in the church is an asset.

Cataloguer - Marigold Library System - Strathmore, AB

Marigold Library System has a full-time position for a cataloguer who will join a collaborative cataloguing team. The successful candidate will work in Marigold headquarters located in Strathmore, 50 km east of Calgary on Hwy#1. Marigold serves 229,000 residents of south central Alberta through 35 member libraries, 15 paperback deposits, and a mail service. See www.marigold.ab.ca.

Marigold is part of TRAC – The Regional Automation Consortium – using the Polaris online catalogue and circulation system which is shared by four regional library systems: Marigold, Northern Lights, Yellowhead and Peace.

The successful candidate, under the direction of the Manager/Cataloguing Services, will be responsible for original and copy cataloguing for our member libraries, as assigned. Cataloguers ensure that the records are as complete and accurate as possible according to both Marigold and TRAC standards.

Requirements: Graduate of a recognized Library Technician program; related experience as asset. The candidates ideally should have knowledge of and experience using AACR2, LCSH, DDC and MARC records. Experience working in an automated environment is preferred; as is experience with OCLC.

Seasonal Library Assistant (Youth Services)

EMPLOYMENT TERMS:
This is a temporary full-time (35hr/wk) position working under the supervision of the Assistant Supervisor of Youth Services for a period of 16 weeks beginning early May 2010 to August 2010. This position involves day, evening and weekend shifts providing reference service, delivering preschool programs, assisting with programs for students, assuming collection maintenance duties and working on assigned projects. Hourly Rate is $23.14/hr paid on a bi-weekly basis. Strathcona County Library currently serves a vibrant rural/urban community of over 85,000. We deliver services from a Sherwood Park location, a bookmobile that visits 12 rural sites on a weekly basis, and a dynamic web site.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide reference and reader’s advisory service for patrons of all ages by assisting patrons in their searches for information, using both print and electronic sources, instructing patrons in the use of specialized electronic and print resources, helping patrons choose materials to read, listen to or view; distributing Grade One Reading Kits; and registering children for summer programs.
Plan & deliver weekly Preschool Story Time programs or assist with the planning and delivery of a Reading Buddies program for children & teen volunteers.
Assist in weeding and re-ordering projects to provide a current and attractive collection.
Assist with processing of pull out collections.
Prepare and update booklists, pathfinders and other resources for staff and public use.
Assist with the Library’s annual Book Sale.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Completion of the first year of a post-secondary degree or diploma program in Library and Information Science or Library Technology.Completion of a reference course is required.Experience working with the public, preferably in a busy library setting is desirable.Completion of a children’s literature course and experience working with children are assets.Available to work day, evening and weekend shifts

The Lethbridge Public Library seeks a dynamic, community minded professional to implement a new service delivery model which includes operating as a multi branch library system. The Lethbridge Public Library Board operates a Main Library, bookmobile, with a new Branch scheduled to open August 23, 2010.

DUTIES:
Reporting to the Associate Director: Public Services, you would be responsible for the day to day management and coordination of community branch(es), the Bookmobile and all other outreach services as provided by the Lethbridge Public Library Board. The position fulfills a role on the Library’s Management Team. Other duties include:
  • Representing the Library in areas related to branch, bookmobile and outreach services and operations including working with representatives from the schools, communities, and City partners
  • Developing and monitoring budgets related to branch services
  • Developing and maintaining appropriate collections for all library service points, in coordination with other Library staff
  • Providing leadership and ensuring appropriate levels of staff training and evaluation for all staff that provide branch and outreach services.
  • Assisting with Library Board policy development, especially in relation to branches, bookmobile and outreach services.

QUALIFICATIONS

You possess a Masters in Library and Information Science degree from an ALA accredited institution and a minimum of three years of a supervisory experience, preferably in multi-branch public library. Demonstrated leadership ability is required and the ability to work effectively within a team environment is essential. Strong customer service and interpersonal communication skills are essential. Demonstrated knowledge of library collection development and service management (especially in the areas of circulation and library programming) is an asset.

The Saskatchewan Health Information Resources Partnership (SHIRP) (www.shirp.ca) is a multi-million dollar initiative operating out of the University Library and its Health Sciences Library. SHIRP seeks out, negotiates, licenses, finances, and makes available for use, electronic health information resources for healthcare practitioners in the province of Saskatchewan. SHIRP is an access point and a conduit for these resources, the means by which healthcare professionals can gain access to authoritative full text resources regardless of location. As an intermediary between resource vendors and practitioners, SHIRP facilitates continuing education and lifelong learning, and assists healthcare practitioners fulfill their information needs.

Accountabilities of the Position
This position reports to the Head of the Health Sciences Library on day-to-day activities, with overall guidance provided by the SHIRP Executive Committee, which includes the Co-Chairs, the Outreach Services Librarian, and the Coordinator.

Librarians, as faculty, are assigned duties aligned with the practice of professional skills outlined in the Library Standards for Promotion and Tenure (2003, as amended). Duties may cover the development of the collections, organizing collections, teaching information research skills, information services, information technology, administration, and research/scholarly work.

Practice of Professional Skills

· Development of the Collections
Communicate and negotiate with database and full-text vendors and service providers to ensure that SHIRP is providing a high level suite of products to its client group. Liaise with the Multi-Type Database Licensing Program, Health Knowledge Network, and other consortia to ensure a coordinated and targeted approach to product negotiation.

· Organizing Collections
Develop and implement policies, procedures and key success measures for SHIRP’s collections and management of electronic resources and infrastructure support. · Information ServicesDevelop, implement and maintain a marketing plan that highlights the products and services provided by SHIRP. Develop and implement a plan of assessment for SHIRP. Monitor and report on annual assessment measures.

· Teaching Information Research Skills
In partnership with the SHIRP Outreach Services Librarian, assist with the implementation of reference and instructional services to the SHIRP community.

· Information Technology
Oversee the ongoing maintenance of the authentication system and the development, implementation, and ongoing maintenance of a health information portal. Troubleshoot technology and connectivity problems, authentication issues, database access issues, etc. for rural regions and health care practitioners. Monitor trends and innovations in technology, especially those related to remote access.

· Administration
Administer the day-to-day financial activities of SHIRP, referring problems and approvals to the SHIRP Co-Chairs. Coordinate and archive SHIRP documentation, (i.e. minutes, licenses, memoranda of understanding, invoices, etc.), plan meetings, etc. Engage in strategic planning development and implementation. Explore grant opportunities for SHIRP.

· Research and Scholarship
Research and scholarship activity is a key component of the practice of professional skills. Librarians are expected to engage in research and scholarly work leading to the development of a formal program of research, and actively disseminate research results via peer-reviewed outlets. Administration and Public Service

It is an expectation that all Librarians participate in collegial activities appropriate to their rank, and are encouraged to engage with academic or professional organizations.

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
A Master of Library Science or equivalent degree from a university/institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan is required.

Candidates should also possess:
  • At least two years relevant experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of current and emerging library and information trends, systems, and databases
  • Effective listening, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in working and negotiating with vendors
  • Solid technical computer skills and the ability to remotely troubleshoot database access difficulties
  • Experience with SFX, especially with configuring SFX targets
  • Experience using a content management system

Appointment is subject to a probationary period of three to five years and specific duties are assigned annually by the Dean, University Library. Librarians as faculty are members of the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Delete titles from library’s database and prepare material for annual book sale.
Plan, organize and work at the annual book sale.

QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of the first year of a post secondary degree or diploma program in Library and Information Science, or Information Management and Library Technology is necessary. Collection Management Course and a Reference Course is desirable.
Experience working in a public library is an asset.

The Murray Library has a staff of 24 library assistants, 13 librarians and a number of student casual assistants who provide a variety of services including Special Collections; Data Services; Interlibrary Loan; Off-Campus support; and Circulation Services. A recent major initiative saw a transformation of the Murray Library to include a user-centered space to create an enhanced Learning Commons – a collaborative initiative of the library, the University Learning Centre, U of S Information Technology Services, and Disability Services for Students. In 2008 a Statistics Canada Research Data Centre (RDC) was established in the Murray Library. Discussions have begun for Phase 3 of the library transformation project that will see additional expansion and integrated services within the Murray Library building and planning is currently underway for an Academic Health Sciences Library as part of a new Academic Health Sciences Complex, with 2013 as the anticipated completion date.

The University Library Strategic Plan sets an ambitious program for the transformation of library resources, facilities and services, designed to ensure the library’s continued growth and development over the course of the University’s second century of development.

Accountabilities of the Position
This position reports to the Head of the Murray Library Branch.

Librarians, as faculty, are assigned duties aligned with the practice of professional skills in the Library Standards for Promotion and Tenure (2003, as amended). Duties may cover the development of the collections, organizing collections, teaching information research skills, information services, information technology, administration, and research/scholarly work.

Practice of Professional Skills
The incumbent in this three year assignment will be responsible for the discovery, development, and analysis of numerical and statistical data collections and services, including marketing to the broad campus community. The successful candidate will provide research and liaison support to data users across campus, including librarian and IT colleagues. Additionally, the Data Services Librarian will serve as the main contact for relevant research centers and with ICPSR and DLI initiatives, ensuring that the University Library is current and active in the data community. The individual in this position will work closely with the GIS librarian in a Data/GIS unit providing a comprehensive program of data management, support, and services. Additional duties may be assigned in related areas and/or for identified strategic priorities. The University Library follows the liaison librarian model, which includes reference, instruction, and collections responsibilities to support on-site and distributed teaching, learning, and research. Under this structure the Data Services Librarian will be responsible for the following:

*Development of the Collections
Select, develop, and promote resources that support the provision of data discovery and access to data sets.

*Information Services
Provide in-depth consultation, reference, and information services for students, faculty, and researchers in the discovery and application of data to support research and teaching activities.

*Teaching Information Research Skills
Develop, promote and deliver effective data research instruction programs for groups and individuals, including library staff, in the discovery and use of data resources. Liaise with instructors to integrate data literacy into the curricula of relevant courses and develop data subsets and other teaching tools to facilitate the use of data.

*Research and Scholarship
While not a requirement of this appointment, research and scholarship is recognized as practice of professional skills and may be pursued as an outcome related to the work of this position.

Administration and Public Service
It is an expectation that all Librarians participate in collegial activities appropriate to their rank, and are encouraged to engage with academic or professional organizations.

Qualifications, Experience and Competencies
A Master of Library Science or equivalent degree from a university/institution recognized by the University of Saskatchewan is required. An undergraduate degree in a relevant science or social science discipline is preferred. Additional data experience or educational background in the use of data sets, applications, and software is preferred. Previous academic library experience would be an asset.

Candidates should also possess:
  • Experience using statistical software packages such as SAS or SPSS, electronic government statistics and data, and the manipulation of datasets
  • Knowledge of quantitative methods of data collection, extraction, and analysis
  • Knowledge of current and emerging trends in data services, resources, software, and other library related information technologies
  • An interest in pursuing a career in academic librarianship and an understanding of the educational mission of a research university
  • Knowledge of trends in reference and research services, and the delivery of library and information services in the educational environment
  • Strong analytical, organizational and customer service skills
  • A commitment to continuing development of professional knowledge and skills
  • Excellent listening, oral, and written communication skills
  • Ability to lead and motivate people
Candidates must be able to:
  • Effectively liaise with faculty and students and work collaboratively to achieve the library's relationships and engagement strategy
  • Develop and manage collections in multiple formats
  • Create and maintain online resources and services
  • Work independently as well as in a collegial team environment
  • Adapt and be flexible in a changing and dynamic environment
This is a three-year term position and specific duties are assigned annually by the Dean, University Library. Librarians as faculty are members of the University of Saskatchewan Faculty Association. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, and for this position the initial starting salary is anticipated to be within the range of $52,731 to $57,000.
