Grande Prairie Regional College - Spring 2010

Staff News

  • Jennifer Thomas has been granted a sabbatical leave for
    2010-2011.
  • She will be taking a number of Educational Technology courses from
Athabasca University as well as investigating and developing
improved ways to provide library services to our
    distance education students.

Services Updates

  • We have started a website redesign process and are excited
about making some changes to our existing site to make it more dynamic
    and interactive.
  • The number of videoconference classes offered continues to
increase as we offer courses to students in locations such as Hinton,
Jasper, and Edson. We added a 3rd
    videoconference room last year.

Renovations

  • The Computer Lab is getting a new look. New computer desks
and chairs are in the process of being ordered. We will also
be wiring the lab with speakers so library instruction can include
    audio/video segments.

Walk the Talk

Since I encouraged everyone to post something to the blog, I felt I should be the first one off the mark!

I don't have a "road report" to pass on as I'm still in Edmonton so I'll have to delve into something else.  My first plan upon returning to Grande Prairie is to check out the eInstruction site and then make a case for how both the library and other departments could use this technology.   Here's a citation from Academic Search Premier available in full-text:

How Remote Responders Affect Teaching. By: Lightstone, Karen. Teaching Professor, Mar2006, Vol. 20 Issue 3, p8-3, 2p.

We only have two group study rooms so we're not quite ready for a software solution such as SAIT uses but it was very interesting to hear from Dave about their experience.

I hope everyone has a safe trip home.
