2010 Winter Semester News from the SAIT Library

2010 Winter Semester News from the SAIT Library

Staff news

Client accounts library technician: Janis Rapchuk commenced work in February. Janis was a member of our evening/weekend part-time staff. Prior to SAIT she worked for Field Aviation in Calgary

Instruction/Communications Librarian: David Luinstra commenced work in January. David comes to us from the Calgary Public Library.

Instruction/Communication Technician: Becky Potvin began work in October 09. Becky’s last position was with Guelph Public Library

Evening/Weekend Shift Technician: Taryn Alard, a recent SAIT L.I.T. graduate,  started in February and is also working part-time for the MRU Library

Renovations

Combination Reference/Leisure Reading collection: The Reference area on Level 1 has been transformed into a new combined reference/leisure reading/comfortable seating area. The transition to Web reference resources allowed for an extensive weed of the reference collection during the summer of 2009. This provided space for an expanded paperback collection.

More Wired Study Tables: Twelve study tables have been added to the library level-1. The tables with network data access and power will accommodate over 60 students for individual and group study.

Security Cameras in Eight Study Rooms: Due to concerns with equipment vandalism and personal safety each study room is now equipped with a security camera. The cameras are monitored by information desk staff. Images are recorded for a ten day period to allow for review of library policy infractions.

Faculty Association Collective Agreement

The SAIT faculty association collection agreement expires in June 2010. Librarians are seeking inclusion in the education allowance and long service allowance programmes.

Spring 2008 AACL Newsletter Issue

Hello AACL Colleagues,

Now that the winter semester is finished, please send me your library news update for the Spring 08 AACL Newsletter. Please also send me your executive, committee, workshop and other reports too. In addition to text, I also always appreciate receiving photographs to make the issue more stimulating.

Thank you,

Unsupervised Children Visiting the Library

The SAIT Library is experiencing an increase in the number of unsupervised children using our facilities. This is occurring particularly on evenings and weekends. We are quite sure that parents are dropping off these children prior to their class. Staff have noticed parents sign on computer workstations with their student ID numbers. Their children often spend the next hour or more gaming on our workstations. Baby-sitting is not part of our library service mandate.

Does your library have an age limit policy for visiting unattended children? I was thinking of writing a policy that excludes unattended library access to youth under the age of twelve.

Guest/Visitor Access to Student Computer Workstations

Hello AACL bloggers,

I would greatly appreciate your comments concerning guest/visitor access to your student computer workstations.

Since fall 2006, we have experienced a large increase in the number of unwelcome guests accessing our student workstations. These people often use our workstations to access recreational chat sites and even unauthorized web sites. At that time, we offered guest access on all of our 125+ workstations. Our first step to discourage unwelcome guest visits was to restrict guest log on to a group of twelve workstations located within view of our information desks. However they still keep coming. We now want to implement some sort of system to issue log-ins from our information desks. We want the opportunity to request identification, ask for their access purpose and enforce a time limit.

Are you using a third party software package or some other system to restrict guest access? I look forward to your input.

Thanks,

Dave Weber,
SAIT Library.

External Book Drops

The SAIT Library is not a stand alone building. It is a facility located within a multi purpose building. The building closes at 11 PM, Monday to Friday, and 7PM on Sunday and Saturday.
Currently we do not have an external material drop off box. Occasionally, we receive complaints from students who want to return libraary materials after our building closes.
I am interested in learning if there are AACL libraries (located within a multi-purpose buildings) that offer external book drops.

Thanks,

Dave Weber,
SAIT Library.
