Grande Prairie Regional College - Spring 2010

Staff News

  • Jennifer Thomas has been granted a sabbatical leave for
    2010-2011.
  • She will be taking a number of Educational Technology courses from
Athabasca University as well as investigating and developing
improved ways to provide library services to our
    distance education students.

Services Updates

  • We have started a website redesign process and are excited
about making some changes to our existing site to make it more dynamic
    and interactive.
  • The number of videoconference classes offered continues to
increase as we offer courses to students in locations such as Hinton,
Jasper, and Edson. We added a 3rd
    videoconference room last year.

Renovations

  • The Computer Lab is getting a new look. New computer desks
and chairs are in the process of being ordered. We will also
be wiring the lab with speakers so library instruction can include
    audio/video segments.

2010 Winter Semester News from the SAIT Library

2010 Winter Semester News from the SAIT Library

Staff news

Client accounts library technician: Janis Rapchuk commenced work in February. Janis was a member of our evening/weekend part-time staff. Prior to SAIT she worked for Field Aviation in Calgary

Instruction/Communications Librarian: David Luinstra commenced work in January. David comes to us from the Calgary Public Library.

Instruction/Communication Technician: Becky Potvin began work in October 09. Becky’s last position was with Guelph Public Library

Evening/Weekend Shift Technician: Taryn Alard, a recent SAIT L.I.T. graduate,  started in February and is also working part-time for the MRU Library

Renovations

Combination Reference/Leisure Reading collection: The Reference area on Level 1 has been transformed into a new combined reference/leisure reading/comfortable seating area. The transition to Web reference resources allowed for an extensive weed of the reference collection during the summer of 2009. This provided space for an expanded paperback collection.

More Wired Study Tables: Twelve study tables have been added to the library level-1. The tables with network data access and power will accommodate over 60 students for individual and group study.

Security Cameras in Eight Study Rooms: Due to concerns with equipment vandalism and personal safety each study room is now equipped with a security camera. The cameras are monitored by information desk staff. Images are recorded for a ten day period to allow for review of library policy infractions.

Faculty Association Collective Agreement

The SAIT faculty association collection agreement expires in June 2010. Librarians are seeking inclusion in the education allowance and long service allowance programmes.
