copyright responsibility
My first blog posting!
Currently at Lakeland College the Library has the responsibility of providing assistance with staff/student queries relating to copyright. One of our staff members serves as the access copyright contact person for the College and she participates on a copyright listserv, distributes information received from access copyright, and posts signs at the photocopiers, etc. She also fields questions on copyright from internal clients and answers them to the best of her ability and/or directs them to the appropriate person (such as the Chair or Dean).
We are taking a look at this area of work, and considering the time and level of expertise involved in carrying out these duties. We'd be very interested in hearing how others are handling copyright in their institutions.
Is print and/or digital copyright a library responsibility in your organization? If it is, who is primarily responsible for disseminating information and fielding questions in this regard?
If it isn't a library responsibility, which unit in your organization is managing copyright concerns?
Many thanks in advance for any information you can provide. Your help is much appreciated!

Copyright
At Norquest we have a Copyright Officer who works out of our Centre for Innovation and Development (CID) that supports curriculum development. Instructors or course developers are responsible for contacting the rights holders and obtaining rights, and are warned that Printing Services will require they provide proof of rights. The Copyright Officer and the CID editors will guide them through the process, but the instructors do the ‘leg work.’
Our Copyright Officer jokes that the team in the Library are her ‘Deputies.’ We are expected to be able to handle basic copyright questions and cc her in on replies given via email. We consult together on any questions that fall into the grey area.
The Library handles all AV Public Performance questions and most digital questions as we signed the database vendor contracts.

Copyright responsibility
Hi Margo,
As with Medicine Hat College and ACAD, copyright administration is the responsibility of the Head of Library and Archives here at The Banff Centre. We do have some individuals in various departments across the Centre who we rely on for entering information into the logs, but this task is primarily left to myself for reporting back to Access Copyright.

At Medicine Hat College the responsibility for maintaining copyright-related agreements and information lies with me as the Director of Library Services; responsibility for providing information to faculty and students, and for maintaining records of copyright permission received, is under our Copyright Officer, who is also our Interlibrary Loans Technician; responsibility for course packs and reporting on such lies with the Bookstore Manager.

The Library Director is responsible for Access Copyright at the Alberta College of Art and Design. I have some help from the Academic secretaries for pricing the coursepacks + sending them out to be copied. A library staff member currently enters the info on the logs and I tally it up and send Access Copyright their cheque. The coursepacks are sold in the Bookstore. I am also acting as the Copyright Officier for the College.
