External Book Drops

The SAIT Library is not a stand alone building. It is a facility located within a multi purpose building. The building closes at 11 PM, Monday to Friday, and 7PM on Sunday and Saturday.
Currently we do not have an external material drop off box. Occasionally, we receive complaints from students who want to return libraary materials after our building closes.
I am interested in learning if there are AACL libraries (located within a multi-purpose buildings) that offer external book drops.

Thanks,

Dave Weber,
SAIT Library.

Canadian Internet Registry Authority (CIRA)

Hi everyone,
An interesting petition that was forwarded to me. Distinguishing business/non-business urls as is done in other countries, would benefit students trying to evaluate Canadian Internet resources. Read on...

AACL Spring Meeting - April 19, 2007

04/19/2007 00:00
04/19/2007 16:30

Geoff Owens will be providing a meeting agenda and more local details via the listserv as planning takes place. In his last message he mentioned some "top-notch" workshop sessions are in the works! I just wanted to get this up on the blog with the date and place in case anyone looks here for the details. I love the blogging option. James is awesome. Cheers! Dan

Weeding film and film canisters

Hello everyone,

I have approximately 50 canisters of film. They have not been used in over four years and I doubt if they ever will be again. Only one or two have any kind of archival value--the rest are essentially useless. I would like to discard them but do not know of an appropriate procedure.

My question: Is anyone else in this situation? If so, how are you discarding these items?

Thanks ~ Barbara

what do the evening staff do??

Now that I have this blogging down pat (after I found my password again!) I have another query for you: what jobs do you have your evening and weekend staff do at the Circulation Desk? As we pass off some of the traditional work that the Circ staff do, such as having e-reserves, self-check circulation, and so on, what jobs are left for those who work the less busy shifts? We are really stuggling to find jobs that will keep them occupied - they are asking for more to do but since they have to stay at the Desk it is difficult to give them projects. We are interested in learning what the evening and weekend clerks do at your libraries. We need them - they are important front lines people - but we want them to stay interested and productive.

digital video cameras

We have an issue at Medicine Hat College that may be unique but we hope not because we need some help! For the past few years all of the students in the Health Studies program take a common course that is team-taught by up to 5 instructors. In this course the students are given assignments where they need to use digital video cameras to tape confidential interviews. They are then to hand a copy of the tape into the instructor. We have lots of cameras but never enough to meet the demand (as with everything, the assignments all seem to be due at the same time for all 150+ students) and there is a componded problem in that the new cameras that use the small format tapes are not compatable with the older models that the instructors use. Consequently we are expected to have enough cameras for all of the students plus the instructors. We cannot afford to do that!

To try to handle this we have been dubbing the small versions onto the older larger type (VHS) or onto DVD but this is very time consuming for the staff and the students all want them done at the same time (of course!).

If you or your AV department has encountered this same problem, how do you handle it?

Student Print Accounts

At our library, our circulation staff are dealing with continuously adding money to students print accounts. This has become very time-consuming, and we were wondering what other libraries do.

We are hoping for a system that will free circulation staff from this task so that they can focus on those patrons who have library-related needs.

Thank you for your input!

8Rs Human Resource Study - Slides

I am posting the slides from Allison Sivak's presentation on the Powerpoint slides from Allison Sivak's presentation on the 8Rs Human Resources study, given at the Nov. 23, 2006 AACL meeting.

If you are interested in learning more about the 8Rs study and its findings, a project overview and copies of reports published thus far, are available at:

Walk the Talk

Since I encouraged everyone to post something to the blog, I felt I should be the first one off the mark!

I don't have a "road report" to pass on as I'm still in Edmonton so I'll have to delve into something else.  My first plan upon returning to Grande Prairie is to check out the eInstruction site and then make a case for how both the library and other departments could use this technology.   Here's a citation from Academic Search Premier available in full-text:

How Remote Responders Affect Teaching. By: Lightstone, Karen. Teaching Professor, Mar2006, Vol. 20 Issue 3, p8-3, 2p.

We only have two group study rooms so we're not quite ready for a software solution such as SAIT uses but it was very interesting to hear from Dave about their experience.

I hope everyone has a safe trip home.
