ScienceDirect - College edition

Hi everyone, I am looking for other institutions that have subscribed to ScienceDirect- College edition. We have some problems with its representation in the sfx knowledge database and am wondering if others are experiencing the same problems. I would appreciate hearing from anyone in AACL who subscribes to this product.
Thanks very much!

how to revitalize little used collections

Interesting thread from the AACL Listserv:

********

Hi AACLers:

It's August so that means that the lazy crazy days of summer will soon be over and we have to actually do some serious work! In preparation I am wondering if any of you have had success with getting students to use some of the collections of materials that used to be more popular in the pre-Google and pre-downloading days: pamphlet files, CD music collections, maps. We still have all three and would rather have them used than throw them away. But maybe we just need to bite the bullet and get rid of them? If you have any suggestions please let me know.

Thanks - hope you have had/are continuing to have a great summer,

Keith

Web page design

One thing on my plate this summer is redesigning the library webpage, particularly the front page of the webpage. Being a small library which means being a jack of all trades and a master of none.

Some of you have changed from a 'button down the left hand side' approach to the column approach. Have your students or faculty commented on this redesign?

Take a leap. Make a blog entry

James convinced me to test out the blog feature of the wonderfully constructed new AACL website. It took a little thumping to convince me that I could handle this since I've never done such a wild thing befor. But, gosh, it's as easy as putting on your socks in the morning.

I hope I am not alone in my unworldliness. It really is simple. And we really need you to participate if this feature is going to have any value.

The hardest part is straining your brain to think of something to say so just say anything to begin with, even just a little meek 'hello'.

Internet Instruction

One of the staff at Olds College Library has been really successful in the past year at vastly increasing the number of classes we now pull in for library instruction (bless her little heart and determination). These sessions focus largely on databases, catalogues, etc. with a little bit of internet searching squeeked in.

What we can't seem to do is convince anyone, instructors or students, that a session on internet searching could be worthwhile. Unfortunately this does not mean that they are so busy searching the databases and finding everything they want that they don't use the internet. They continue to use the internet but are often not strong searchers.

Has anyone been able to successfully offer separate internet sessions? If so, how do you market it?
